Don't Rush to Buy Storage Boxes for Seasonal Organizing: Lessons from My 200-Yuan Mistake

Don’t Rush to Buy Storage Boxes for Seasonal Organizing: Lessons from My 200-Yuan Mistake

Girls, it’s that season again.

Every year around this time, my social media shows two types of people: one group doing “minimalism challenges,” showing off piles of clothes they’ve disposed of; the other is the “storage equipment faction,” hauling various storage boxes, bins, and bags into their homes.

I was the second type last year. The result? 200 yuan worth of storage boxes I bought, half of which are still unopened.

My Mistake List

Let me tell you how I spent that 200 yuan:

Drawer-style storage boxes × 4: Saw them recommended on Xiaohongshu, said drawer-style was perfect for organizing T-shirts, easy to grab. Bought 4, but my wardrobe’s drawer space couldn’t fit them all—I literally couldn’t close any of the drawers.

Vacuum storage bags × 2: Thought I could compress comforter volume. Turns out my storage cabinet doesn’t have that many comforters to store, but my cotton quilt compressed into something as hard as a brick.

Transparent shoe boxes × 6: Marketing said they could stack. But none of my 6 pairs of boots could fit inside.

After this combo, I summed up a bloody lesson: before buying storage equipment, measure the things you already have at home first.

What’s the Correct Storage Sequence?

As someone who’s been through this, here’s my experience: the correct order for seasonal storage should be:

Step 1: Take inventory first

Take out all the clothes for the current season, spread them on the bed or floor. The purpose of inventory is to let you know exactly how much you have, avoiding overbuying.

Step 2: Subtraction first

Did you wear any piece of clothing from this season even once? If not, deal with it. Don’t think “maybe I’ll wear it next year”—if you didn’t wear it this year, you probably won’t next year either.

Step 3: Evaluate existing storage tools

What storage tools do you already have at home? Under the bed, top of the cabinet, free space in drawers… these all count. Use what you have first, then consider buying new.

Step 4: Buy according to actual need

At this point, if you discover you’re genuinely missing a specific type of storage tool, then buy. Go shopping with specific measurements in mind, not just ordering whatever “bestseller” you see online.

Those Storage Gadgets You Really Don’t Need

Honestly, many “storage gadgets” online have very strong marketing vibes. I really don’t recommend stockpiling these types:

Irregularly shaped storage boxes: Like ones specifically for scarves, hats, or bags… if you don’t have many such items at home, you won’t use them.

Stacking combo sets: Looks cheap, but often includes one or two boxes you can’t use.

Buying too many at once: When it comes to storage gear, less is more. If you buy too few, you can supplement later. If you buy too many, you can’t return them.

My 2026 Seasonal Storage List

This year, I only bought 2 things for seasonal storage:

  1. A set of stackable transparent drawer boxes (only bought 2, because I only had 2 thin comforters to store)
  2. A few cloth bags made from old clothes (made from unwearable old T-shirts, didn’t cost a dime)

I’ve already finished everything, saving about 180 yuan compared to last year.

So my advice is: first inventory, then subtract, then buy. Get the sequence right, and you won’t need to personally pay for the 200-yuan lesson.
