Seasonal Skincare Organization: 3 Steps to Save Money

Last week while organizing skincare products, I found 3 bottles of nearly-expired face cream in my cabinet. All bought during last year’s Double 11 sale—totally forgotten.

Seasonal changes aren’t just about switching clothes. Skincare needs organizing too. Otherwise you fall into a “buy-forget-buy-again” cycle—wasted money.

Step 1: Inventory Check

Take out all skincare products and spread them on a table. This step is crucial—you need to know your actual “stock.”

Then categorize by “opened/unopened”:

  • Unopened: Check expiration dates, mark the expiry month
  • Opened: Products usually last 6-12 months after opening. Stick a small label on the bottom with the opening date.

My discovery: 5 bottles of serum, 3 jars of face cream, countless sheet masks. Enough for a year.

Step 2: Declutter

Expiring Soon: Don’t feel bad—throw them out. Expired skincare ingredients can deteriorate and harm your skin.

Wrong for Your Skin Type: Gift to friends or sell secondhand. Don’t force yourself to use it—damaging your skin costs more.

Duplicate Functions: If you have 3 brightening serums, use one and queue the others by expiration date. Don’t open all three simultaneously—none will get finished.

My decluttering results: Threw out 2 expired bottles, gifted 1 unsuitable one to a friend. Remaining products feel much more manageable.

Step 3: Plan Purchases

Based on current inventory, list “truly needed” items:

  • Spring Essentials: Sunscreen (UV is strong in spring too), hydrating masks (skin gets dry during seasonal changes)
  • Running Low: What’s down to 1/3? Start watching prices
  • Never Used: Unless necessary, skip new products

My shopping list: 1 bottle sunscreen, 1 box hydrating masks. Budget under 300 RMB.

Seasonal Skincare Storage Essentials

Avoid Light: Most skincare products fear direct sunlight—store in cool places or cabinets.

Avoid Heat: Don’t put near heaters or sunlit windowsills—high temperatures break down ingredients.

Avoid Moisture: Bathroom humidity is unsuitable for skincare storage unless products are specifically marked “bathroom-safe.”

My Money-Saving Lessons

After organizing skincare, I realized I wasted at least 1000 RMB in the past year:

  • Duplicate purchases: Several serums with identical functions
  • Forgotten items: Expired without even opening
  • Impulse buys: Trendy products that didn’t suit me

My current principle: Finish one bottle before buying another, no stockpiling, no following trends. This ensures fresh products and avoids waste.

Ladies, I suggest setting aside a weekend to organize your skincare cabinet. You might discover “I actually don’t need to buy anything.”
