The 618 Price Protection Secrets Retailers Don't Want You to Know
Every major sale, someone comes to me complaining: should have waited one more day, would have been 100 yuan cheaper.
There’s actually a feature called “price protection” that can genuinely save money if you know how to use it. Retailers just don’t主动 tell you about the loopholes.
Loophole 1: Price protection period is 15 days, not 30
Most people think if they buy something, any price drop within 30 days gets reimbursed. Actually, most platforms offer 15 days, not 30.
And that 15 days starts from your order date, not the delivery date.
So if you ordered during the pre-sale period and only found out something was cheaper on 618 itself—sorry, your price protection window has already closed.
Loophole 2: Price protection excludes “special promotions”
This is the most deceptive part.
Many product pages mark “30-day price protection,” but the fine print says “excluding coupons, discount events, store red packets and other special promotions.”
What this means: retailers can drop prices on 618 day through large hidden coupons, and your price protection claim gets rejected—because the system only compares “listed price,” not “final transaction price.”
Solution: before buying, ask the customer service exactly what the price protection rules cover, especially regarding store coupons and discount events.
Loophole 3: Price protection has a narrow application window
Even if your order qualifies for price protection, you must apply within a specific timeframe—usually 72 hours after discovering the price drop. After that, the system automatically closes the application portal.
Many people discover the price drop after receiving their package, but by then 72 hours may have already passed.
My recommendation: check your order prices every day during the protection window. If you spot a drop, apply for protection immediately. Don’t wait.
A small price protection application tip
When applying for price protection, don’t just submit one order screenshot. Submit a current price screenshot AND a historical order screenshot together. Customer service handles these much faster when the evidence is clear.
Some platforms’ price protection is automatic. With good screenshot evidence, the price difference goes directly into your account and can be used immediately.
Most important advice
Instead of claiming price protection after buying, do your homework before buying.
Put items in your cart and observe their price movements over 7-14 days. If you see prices suddenly spike before a major promotion and then discount, you know this is a standard retailer tactic.
Use historical price lookup tools (like 慢慢买 or 惠惠购物助手) to see the historical price curve with one click. Saves you from falling for the trick.
