After Reading IKEA's Fridge Organization Guide, I Threw Away a Third of My Stock
My old fridge was like a “fresh food mystery box.”
Every time I opened it, I had no idea what was inside—a box of meat from who-knows-when, half a cucumber, two eggs of questionable age…
Until I read IKEA’s latest fridge organization guide, I realized my fridge problem wasn’t “too small”—it was “too chaotic.”
Clear Containers Are Key
IKEA’s first recommendation: Take ingredients out of plastic bags and put them in clear containers.
I understood the principle but always thought “plastic bags work fine.” It wasn’t until I actually switched to clear boxes that I saw the difference:
- Before: A pile of plastic bags stacked together, needing to move everything around to find what I wanted
- After: Everything visible at a glance, direct access to what I need
Plus, clear containers can be stacked, doubling your space efficiency. IKEA’s STELLÅ or KUGGIS boxes have great seals—food stays fresh for a week without absorbing odors.
Placement Matters
Many people don’t know that different areas of your fridge have different temperatures:
- Top shelf: Most stable temperature—perfect for ready-to-eat foods, leftovers
- Middle shelf: Ideal for dairy, eggs
- Bottom shelf: Coldest spot—raw meat, seafood
- Door rack: Biggest temperature fluctuation—condiments, drinks
I used to stuff everything in the middle shelf. No wonder my produce wasn’t staying fresh.
Another key point: Raw meat must go on the bottom shelf, in a sealed container. Otherwise, blood dripping down contaminates everything else.
##保鲜膜 Out,保鲜盒 In
I used to just shove supermarket plastic bags straight into the fridge. But plastic bags aren’t breathable—vegetables can’t “breathe” inside them, causing them to spoil faster.
After switching to保鲜盒, my vegetables clearly last longer.
My experience: Shopping twice a week and storing in clear containers beats buying a week’s worth at once and cramming it into plastic bags.
My Real Results
After organizing my fridge following IKEA’s guide, I threw away a third of my “zombie ingredients”—those questionable items of unknown age.
Now every time I open my fridge, my mood improves. And because everything’s visible and accessible, I’m actually more motivated to cook.
If your fridge is also a “mystery box,” I seriously recommend trying this method. No need to buy expensive containers—regular clear保鲜盒 work fine. The key is the six-character truth: “拿出来、放进去、摆整齐” (take out, put in, organize neatly).
Reflection Question
Is your fridge an “organized” fridge or a “mystery box” fridge? What’s your fridge organization secret?
