April Wardrobe Rotation: I Found 37 Unworn Clothes in My Closet

Last Saturday I finally decided to tackle my closet. The trigger? Spending 20 minutes looking for a white t-shirt, only to find it crushed under a thick down jacket.

That organizing session left me stunned.

Thirty-seven. I had 37 pieces of clothing still with tags on them, some purchased over two years ago. Staring at these “future me will definitely wear these” items, I fell into deep contemplation—what exactly was I thinking at the time?

But the purge wasn’t entirely without rewards. I developed a fairly efficient seasonal rotation system that I’m sharing with you.

Step one: Take everything out. Seriously, everything. Don’t think “I’ll definitely still wear this”—just dump it all on your bed. Only by seeing the full picture do you realize how bad things are. My bed couldn’t hold everything; I had to commandeer the sofa too.

Step two: The three-second rule. Hold each item and decide in three seconds: keep, toss, or maybe. Don’t hesitate—hesitation means your subconscious is telling you “actually, you don’t need this.” All 37 of my tagged items went to the “maybe” pile, and after some sober reflection, they all went.

Step three: Categorize. Sort remaining clothes by season and occasion. I created four categories: spring-summer casual, spring-summer formal, fall-winter casual, fall-winter formal. Then pack away fall-winter items in storage bins under the bed. Hang spring-summer pieces by color for easy browsing.

Step four: Vacuum compression. Bulky items like down jackets and coats go in vacuum bags—the volume shrinks by two-thirds. I bought electric pump ones; takes minutes versus the manual effort.

After organizing, my closet felt refreshing and my mood improved. Best of all, finding clothes now takes just two minutes daily.

Ladies, don’t wait until it’s scorching hot to start organizing. Do it now.
