My First Time Using HSR Pet Transport: Mistakes Made and a Complete Prep Checklist

Last month I took my cat to visit a friend in Chengdu via high-speed rail pet transport for the first time.

Honestly, I’d been too nervous to try before. Handing my cat over to a luggage car felt risky. But a friend said the service has improved significantly, so I gave it a shot.

Result: way smoother than expected.

How HSR Pet Transport Works Now

In 2026, high-speed rail pet transport has become more widely available in China. You can book pet transport when purchasing your ticket. Pets travel in a dedicated luggage car with temperature control and ventilation.

Not all trains support it - check via 12306 or railway customer service. My Chengdu-Chongqing route had plenty of options.

Cost is weight-based. My cat plus carrier totaled 6kg, under 100 yuan. Way cheaper than pet transport services.

My Prep Checklist

3 days before: Confirm train supports pet transport. Prepare health certificate and vaccination records. Buy a compliant hard-shell carrier with ventilation holes.

1 day before: Line the carrier with pee pads and a familiar towel. Pack a small bag of food and collapsible water bowl. Don’t overfeed to avoid motion sickness.

Day of: Arrive 1.5 hours early. Process at the designated luggage counter. Get your transport receipt, board normally, collect your pet at the destination.

Lessons Learned

First, carrier size matters. My first one was too large and got rejected. Buy to spec.

Second, not all pets handle transport well. If yours panics in carriers, do adaptation training for a week beforehand. My cat ate and slept in the carrier for a week before the trip.

Third, don’t open the carrier immediately at arrival. Find a quiet corner first. A friend opened theirs right away and spent 30 minutes chasing their cat through the station.

Compared to Alternatives

Driving: flexible but stressful. 3-hour drive with a screaming cat.
Pet transport service: door-to-door but expensive (500+ yuan) and you hand your pet to strangers.
HSR transport: cheapest, fastest (1 hour), dedicated compartment.

HSR wins for me. The only downside is not seeing your pet during transit, but honestly, cats sleep through most of it.

May Day Travelers

If you’re planning to travel with pets this holiday:

  1. Confirm pet transport availability on your route
  2. Buy a compliant carrier early
  3. Get a vet checkup and health certificate
  4. Start carrier training one week before
  5. Allow extra time at the station

Traveling with pets is hassle. But seeing my cat sunbathing on my friend’s balcony? Worth every minute.
