May Day Travel on a Budget: 5 Tips That Saved Me 2000 Yuan
Only 10 days until May Day!
Honestly, seeing flight prices almost made me give up on traveling. Normally 800 yuan tickets suddenly jumped to 2500. Hotels were worse — normally 300 yuan budget hotels going for 800+ during the holiday.
But I didn’t want to give up on this vacation. So I spent 3 nights researching and found a “May Day travel without going broke” strategy.
This strategy turned my originally 5000 yuan budget trip into just 3000 yuan. Saved a full 2000 yuan.
Today I’m sharing these 5 details with you — tried, tested, and effective.
Detail 1: Don’t Rush Flight Bookings — This Timing is Sweetest
My old habit: see reasonable flight prices, book immediately. Result? Often prices drop after I buy, leaving me regretful.
This time I got smarter and checked historical flight price data.
Found a pattern: Domestic flights are cheapest 7-10 days before departure.
Why? Airlines start worrying about unsold seats around this time and release discounted tickets.
For me, a 2500 yuan flight suddenly dropped to 1500 eight days before departure. Booked immediately, saved 1000.
Of course, this requires flexibility. If you absolutely need a specific flight time, don’t wait — buy early for peace of mind.
But if you’re like me, just needing “sometime during May Day,” this method absolutely works.
Detail 2: Don’t Just Look at Hotels — Homestays Are Better Deals Than You Think
I originally planned to stay in hotels the whole trip. But checking prices, May Day hotels were 800+ per night — 3 nights would be 2400 yuan.
Then I checked homestays and discovered something shocking: Same location, same quality homestays are 40% cheaper than hotels during May Day.
I ended up choosing a homestay 10 minutes walking from attractions, with kitchen, washing machine, private bathroom — just 450 per night. 3 nights cost only 1350 yuan, saving over 1000 compared to hotels.
Plus homestays have another benefit: you can cook. Breakfast and dinner on your own — both money-saving and healthy.
Of course, choosing homestays has pitfalls to avoid:
- Always check reviews, especially “cleanliness” and “location” related ones
- Confirm check-in and check-out times with the host in advance
- If using Airbnb or similar platforms for the first time, choose “Superhost” properties — more reliable
Detail 3: Attraction Tickets — Don’t Buy from Official Channels
This detail, many people don’t know.
The attraction I visited had an official price of 180 yuan. But on Meituan, just 120 yuan. Ctrip was even cheaper at 115 yuan.
Plus these platforms often have “ticket + guided tour” or “ticket + transport” packages that work out even better.
I discovered an even cheaper way: Many attractions have half-price entry after 4 PM.
For one attraction this trip, after 4 PM entry dropped from 180 to 90 yuan. Less time to visit, but for “check-in” style attractions, it’s sufficient.
Note: Not all attractions have half-price policies — check in advance.
Detail 4: Dining Costs — These Tricks Cut Expenses in Half
Dining is a major expense during May Day. Decent restaurants start at 100 yuan per person.
I used several methods to keep dining costs around 50 yuan per person:
Handle breakfast yourself: Homestay had a kitchen. Bread, milk, eggs — breakfast under 10 yuan per person.
Eat lunch outside attractions: Restaurants inside attractions cost 2-3x outside prices. Walk a bit to save money.
Choose locals’ restaurants for dinner: Use Dianping to search “locals recommend” — avoid tourist traps, eat well for 50 yuan per person.
Bring water and snacks: Bottled water inside scenic areas costs 5-10 yuan. Bring your own and save 30-50 yuan per day.
These methods sound a bit “frugal,” but they really work. Over 3 days, dining costs were 300+ yuan less than expected.
Detail 5: Transportation — Don’t Just Calculate Flight Costs
Many people focus only on flight prices but ignore transportation after arrival.
My destination this time: airport 50 km from downtown. Taxi costs 150 yuan. But airport bus is just 25 yuan, light rail even cheaper at 18 yuan.
Round trip saves over 200 yuan on transportation.
Also transportation between attractions. I used local shared electric bikes — 30 yuan per day unlimited riding. Much cheaper than taxis.
If attractions are scattered, consider renting an e-bike or bicycle — both money-saving and convenient.
Final Reminder: Saving Money is for Better Enjoyment
After sharing all these money-saving methods, I must remind you: saving money isn’t the goal — enjoying your vacation is.
I saved 2000 yuan this trip, but still spent where it mattered. Like that “must-see once in a lifetime” show inside the attraction — 280 yuan tickets, didn’t hesitate, bought them.
Because I knew, this show might be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. 280 yuan for an unforgettable memory — worth it.
So the principle is: Save where you can, spend where it truly matters.
May Day holiday is for relaxing and enjoying. If you exhaust yourself trying to save money, might as well not bother.
Hope this guide helps you both save money and have a great May Day holiday.
