Summer Clothing Care: How I Almost Ruined a $40 Silk Shirt
Girls, I have to share a painful lesson with you today.
Last month I bought a silk shirt for about 300 yuan. First wash nearly destroyed it—I tossed it in the washing machine like everything else. When I took it out, it was wrinkled with several pulls in the fabric.
My heart hurt so bad.
Later I did some research on how to wash different summer fabrics, and wow—there is seriously a lot to know.
Silk: Cold Water + Specialized Detergent
Silk is genuinely delicate. No hot water, no vigorous scrubbing, no wringing. The correct method: cold water + specialized silk detergent, gently press (don’t scrub), then dry flat.
I bought another silk shirt after that and washed it properly. Still looks great.
Linen: Machine Washable But Careful
Linen is easier to handle. Machine washable, but use the gentle cycle. Also, linen wrinkles easily—smooth it out while hanging to dry. Don’t wait until it’s wrinkled to iron, or you’re in trouble.
Cotton-Linen: Most Forgiving
Cotton-linen is probably the most common and easiest summer fabric. Regular machine wash works, but wash white cotton-linen separately from dark colors.
One Universal Principle
No matter the fabric, always check the tag first. The tag has the actual correct instructions.
I got burned before because I didn’t read tags. Now I always glance at them before washing.
