Store Your Summer Mattress Incorrectly and You’ll Cry in Fall—Here’s the Right Method

Don’t ask me how I know.

The fall I took out last year’s cooling mat to store away, I noticed a faint yellow ring along the edge. That cooling mat cost me over 300 yuan when I bought it—I had some complicated feelings that day.

After that I researched the correct storage method properly. Last year I followed this approach and when I took it out this year, it was still in great condition. Let me share it with you.

The key to cooling mat storage: wash it, dry completely, prevent moisture.

Many people just roll it up and shove it in the closet—that’s the most common mistake. Body sweat and skin cells on the mat, if not cleaned, become a breeding ground for mold in humid environments.

The correct process: first wipe along the bamboo strips with a damp towel, add a small amount of baking soda for stubborn stains, rinse clean, then sun-dry completely until bone dry (this step is critical—better to air it an extra day or two than leave any hint of moisture), finally wrap in newspaper or a specialized cooling mat storage bag and place on the top shelf of your closet.

AC comforters and summer quilts follow the same principle but don’t need as much sun.

AC comforter material isn’t as “thick” as a cooling mat—over-drying can actually cause the fibers to clump. After washing, air-dry in a ventilated area for half to a full day, ensure there’s no moisture, seal in a storage bag, and you’re set.

Most important point: don’t use plastic bags for long-term storage.

Non-breathable plastic traps residual moisture inside. Use non-woven storage bags or cotton cloth bags instead.

These small details—when done right—will keep your bedding lasting for years.
