Your Kitchen Survived the Holiday. Here's How to Bring It Back to Life

Five days off. Seven days of cooking. One completely destroyed kitchen.

When I got back from the holiday and saw the state of my kitchen — scorched wok, dried grease on the stovetop, that grimy layer on the range hood filter — I almost called a professional cleaner.

But then I remembered: I’m supposed to be good at this stuff.

Two evenings later, my kitchen looked like new. Here’s exactly what I did:

Step 1: The Range Hood Filter — Soak It

The nastiest part, but also the most satisfying.

  • Remove the filter (usually just clips off)
  • Fill a large container with warm water, add 3 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 cup of white vinegar
  • Let it soak 30 minutes
  • Scrub gently with a soft brush — the grease releases almost on its own

Don’t use steel wool. It scratches the coating and makes things worse next time.

Step 2: The Stovetop — Hot Towel Method

For burnt-on grime, skip the chemical cleaner and try this:

  • Wet a towel with very hot water, microwave 1 minute (or pour boiling water over it)
  • Place the hot towel over the burnt area for 2-3 minutes
  • The grime softens and wipes away easily
  • Finish with a spray cleaner and sponge

So much easier than scrubbing.

Step 3: The Scorched Wok — Baking Soda + Dish Soap

My foolproof method:

  • Add water to cover the scorch marks
  • Add 3 tablespoons of baking soda and 2 pumps of dish soap
  • Bring to a boil, then simmer 5 minutes
  • Let cool, then scrape with a wooden spatula

Stubborn marks repeat once.

Do this every weekend for 20 minutes and you’ll never face a “kitchen disaster” again.
