Credit Card Savings Hacks 2026: Save 5000 RMB a Year with These Tips

Last week scrolling through social media, I saw someone redeem credit card points for a robot vacuum. I checked my own points and realized I’d missed many benefits.

2026 major bank credit card promotions are fully launched, covering dining, shopping, gas, and travel. But many people like me get cards without knowing how to use them—missing money-saving opportunities.

First Principle: Don’t Spend Just for Points

Credit card savings prerequisite: only buy what you need; don’t buy what you don’t need just because “there’s a discount.”

A friend of mine bought many unnecessary things to accumulate points. Final calculation: points redeemed items worth a few hundred, but wasted spending totaled thousands. Backwards thinking.

Right mindset: Treat credit cards as “extra cashback for daily spending,” not “reason to spend.”

2026 Bank Promotions Overview

Dining: China Merchants Bank and SPD Bank have best dining cashback—many restaurants offer half-price or buy-one-get-one on Fridays and Saturdays. Once weekly dining out saves 200-300 RMB monthly.

Shopping: CCB and ICBC’s online shopping cashback is solid—works on JD and Tmall. During big sales, cashback can reach 10%.

Gas: Bank of China and Agricultural Bank have most stable gas discounts—many stations offer 0.5-1 RMB off per liter. Two tank fill-ups monthly saves 20-40 RMB.

Travel: Bank of Communications’ airline miles accumulation is most worthwhile—frequent travelers can earn a free flight yearly.

My Card Strategy

I have 4 credit cards, each for different purposes:

  1. CMB Card: Daily dining, Friday/Saturday half-price deals
  2. CCB Card: Online shopping, high cashback ratio
  3. BOC Card: Gas, 0.8 RMB off per liter
  4. BOCOM Card: Business travel booking, accumulating miles

Key: Don’t max out any card. Keep each within what you can pay off—don’t overspend just for points.

Points Redemption Pitfalls

Don’t Redeem Physical Items: Points-for-products usually have poor value. 5000 points for a thermos might only be worth 50 RMB. Same points for phone credit or airline miles doubles value.

Watch for Promotions: Many banks have “double points” or “points + cash” deals—best redemption timing.

Use Promptly: Points expire—don’t let them go to waste accumulating. I almost missed out, luckily checked in time.

2026 Savings Target

Based on my spending habits, how much can reasonable credit card use save annually? I calculated:

  • Dining cashback: 200/month × 12 = 2400 RMB
  • Online shopping cashback: 150/month × 12 = 1800 RMB (based on actual spending)
  • Gas discounts: 30/month × 12 = 360 RMB
  • Points redemption: Conservative estimate 500 RMB

Total: 5060 RMB

That’s not small change. Save 5000 RMB yearly—enough for several clothing items.

Final Reminder

Credit card savings require paying on time. Once overdue, interest and late fees eat up all your savings.

My approach: Pay credit card bills immediately when salary arrives, then arrange other expenses with remaining money. Never forget payments, never overdraw.

By the way, if you don’t have credit cards or want new ones, compare benefits first. Don’t get high-annual-fee, low-benefit “useless cards.” Better to have fewer cards and use each well.
