Air Fryer Cleaning Mistakes: 3 Errors I Made for a Year Before Figuring It Out

Air fryers are genuinely one of the best kitchen appliances in recent years, but cleaning them? Honestly more of a headache than cooking in them sometimes.

I bought my air fryer a year ago, made countless mistakes, and finally figured out the 3 most common cleaning errors. Sharing so you don’t have to learn the hard way.

Mistake 1: Waiting until grease is dry before cleaning

I used to wait for grease to dry before wiping it down, thinking it would be easier. Then a friend told me: grease is actually easier to clean while it’s still warm. When the air fryer is still slightly hot and the grease is still liquid, that’s when it wipes off most easily.

Now I wipe it down about 2 minutes after taking out the food. The temperature is just right, grease hasn’t solidified yet, and it comes off effortlessly.

If it has already solidified, don’t scrape hard. Spray some white vinegar and hot water, soak 10 minutes, then wipe.

Mistake 2: Using steel wool on the coating

This is the biggest mistake.

Air fryer coatings—whether non-stick or ceramic—cannot handle abrasive scrubbing. One round with steel wool and the coating starts wearing down. After enough damage, food starts sticking.

I use a soft sponge + neutral dish soap, gently. For stubborn residue, I make a baking soda paste (baking soda + water, 1:1 ratio), apply it to the stain, wait 30 minutes, then wipe.

Baking soda paste is my ultimate weapon. Great cleaning power, and it won’t damage the coating.

Mistake 3: Ignoring the door seal

This is the most overlooked part.

The door seal (the rubber ring around the door) is the easiest place for grease and bacteria to build up. I never thought about cleaning it until one day there was a weird smell.

Clean the seal with a cotton swab dipped in soapy water, carefully wipe the gaps, then dry with a clean cloth.

If the seal already smells off, wipe it with white vinegar. That usually fixes it.

One extra tip

Every time after using the air fryer, while it’s still warm, wipe the interior walls with a paper towel to remove grease. This prevents油脂 from being repeatedly heated—repeatedly heated grease produces odors and isn’t great for your health.

This step takes 30 seconds but makes a huge difference in cleaning.
