May Day Travel Pitfalls Guide: 5 Tourism Traps I've Fallen Into, Finally Organized
Ready for the 5-day May Day holiday?
Honestly, every time I see “travel disaster” complaints in my social feed, I want to shake those people—these traps are totally avoidable!
Today I’m dumping all the lessons I’ve learned over the years, hoping to save you money and bad moods.
Trap 1: Booking hotels a month early, but paying more
Many think “book early = cheaper.” That’s actually wrong.
Tested experience: During peak times like May Day, hotel pricing curves go up, then down, then up again. Two months early is most expensive (vendors bet you’re desperate); about a week early often has last-minute deals.
My approach: Lock in free-cancellation rooms a month ahead, then check prices every few days. When I see a drop, rebook and cancel the original. This trick saved me over 800 RMB last year.
Trap 2: “Secret spots” from Xiaohongshu = 3-hour queues
Those “hidden gems” on social media? Packed when you arrive.
My strategy: Off-peak timing + alternatives. In Chengdu, don’t visit Kuanzhai Alley during the day—go after 9 PM. Or skip to nearby Kuixinglou Street—same architecture style, half the crowds.
Another secret: Ask locals. Taxi drivers, convenience store staff—their recommendations often beat online guides.
Trap 3: Tourist shop markup is ridiculous
Shops at scenic entrances are 99% traps.
Last year I saw “handmade osmanthus cake” at a historic town—68 RMB per pound, fancy packaging. Back home, Taobao showed the same product for 19.9 RMB with free shipping. Taste? One bite and it went to the back of my cabinet.
Now my rule: At scenic spots, only buy what you can eat on-site. For souvenirs, search online first. If you really want to bring something, go to local markets—fruit and dried goods are real.
Trap 4: Tour group “optional” shopping
The words “pure play tour” have lost all meaning. Truly pure tours cost more than DIY.
My current approach: Book transport and hotels myself, arrange day tours locally. More hassle, but I control time and money.
Trap 5: No Plan B
Bad weather? Attraction closed? Restaurant has a 2-hour wait?
I always prepare two plans: Plan A for ideal conditions, Plan B for rainy-day alternatives. Whatever happens, I’m not stressed.
