3 Kitchen Gadgets I Regret Buying (The 2nd One Is Probably in Your Drawer)
Hey everyone, today I am sharing lessons from my wasted money.
As someone who must compare before buying, I have purchased many viral kitchen gadgets. Some are genuinely useful. Others… not so much.
Here are 3 I regret buying. The products are not necessarily bad—just wrong for my situation. Sharing to help you avoid the same traps.
First: The Multi-Function Vegetable Slicer
Ads show it like this: julienne, slice, dice—all in one, become a Michelin chef instantly.
I bought one. 179 yuan.
Used it 3 times. Now collecting dust in the cabinet.
What is wrong?
First, cleaning is a nightmare. Vegetable bits get stuck in blade crevices. Brushes cannot reach them.
Second, limited applicability. Potatoes and radishes, fine. Softer tomatoes and cucumbers? Turn to mush.
Third, and most fatal—it is not faster than hand-cutting. Prep + cleaning time, I could have hand-cut everything already.
Unless you are cooking feasts daily, skip it.
Second: Garlic Press
You probably have this, or at least considered it.
I bought a stainless steel one, looked sturdy, 40+ yuan.
Result? Garlic juice all over my hands, and it does not even press properly. Those effortless press ads are pure fiction.
Later I learned: garlic presses work for peeled, soft cloves. The garlic we use often has hard cores—will not press through.
Now I just smash with my knife. Two whacks, faster than the press, easier to clean.
Third: Silicone Stretch Lids
Set of 6, various sizes, claimed to replace plastic wrap—eco-friendly and convenient.
I believed it. Bought it.
One month later, all abandoned.
Why?
First, are they really universal? No. Bowl rims must be standard circles with flat edges. Many of my bowls are irregular—will not seal.
Second, mediocre seal. Looks tight, but overnight in the fridge? Still absorbs odors.
Finally, something I did not anticipate—they are hard to store! Six silicone lids of different sizes. Stack together and they take space. Separate and you lose them.
I am back to plastic wrap + containers.

I am not dismissing all kitchen gadgets. Some are genuinely great—my air fryer and electric pressure cooker get constant use.
But gadgets are only magical when they solve real pain points in specific scenarios. If you do not have that pain point, it becomes clutter.
My advice: ask yourself three questions before buying—
- Without this tool, am I really inconvenienced?
- Can I accept the cleaning/maintenance cost?
- What is the specific use scenario in my home?
Think clearly before ordering, save yourself wasted money.
