Grain Rain Wellness Guide: Nourishing Your Body for the Season Transition

Today’s Guyu—the last solar term of spring. In 15 days, summer officially arrives.

Honestly, I used to ignore these solar terms, thinking they were old superstitions. But after moving to Chengdu with its heavy humidity, I started paying attention. Tested personally—works.

Guyu literally means “rain nourishes the grains.” Lots of rain, lots of humidity. Traditional Chinese Medicine says this is when you should “strengthen the spleen, remove dampness, and nourish yang.” How do I know? Last Guyu I ignored this advice and got eczema for a month. Cost me nearly 1000 RMB in doctor visits. Don’t ask how I know.

Let’s talk food. These 15 days, eat spleen-strengthening, dampness-removing foods: barley, red beans, Chinese yam, poria. I always keep barley-red bean porridge in my rice cooker, preset the night before, and wake up to a warm breakfast. Cost? Barley is 8 RMB per jin, red beans 6 RMB—enough for half a month.

Herbal tea matters too. Corn silk tea, dried tangerine peel with poria—both excellent. Don’t throw away corn silk; dry it and brew it. Natural diuretic, removes dampness, and it’s free. Grandma taught me this—old wisdom shouldn’t be lost.

Sleep schedule: after Guyu, days get longer. Go to bed before 11 PM, wake up at 6:30 AM. Follow the sun. I know it’s hard for young people, but try it for a week—you’ll feel different. More energy, better skin, less coffee needed.

Exercise: try Baduanjin or brisk walking. Not marathons—just 30 minutes until lightly sweating. Key is doing it outdoors, getting sunlight, building yang energy. In Chengdu’s weather, sunny days are rare. When they come, don’t stay inside.

One final warning: don’t crave cold during Guyu. Don’t set AC too low, don’t drink iced beverages, don’t eat fruit straight from the fridge. Dampness enters from outside and through your mouth—you know how it works.

This is “following natural timing.” Spring nurtures, summer grows. Nurture your body in spring so it can handle summer heat. Your body is your capital, don’t neglect it.

Start today: cook barley-red bean porridge, brew corn silk tea, sleep at 11 PM sharp. Costs under 10 RMB, works better than 1000-RMB supplements.
