Curtains Accumulate More Dust Than Floors? This Method Saved Me $30 on Cleaning Services
Last week I hired a housekeeper to clean.
The first thing the auntie did upon entering wasn’t sweeping or mopping—it was taking down the curtains.
I was puzzled and asked, “Auntie, don’t you wash curtains only when they’re dirty?”
She gave me a look and said, “Young lady, these curtains probably haven’t been washed in a year, right? They’re dirtier than the floor.”
I was stunned.
Why Are Curtains Dirtier Than Floors?
The auntie explained, and then I understood—
Curtains are exposed to air every day, absorbing large amounts of dust, lint, pollen, even PM2.5.
Especially when windows are open for ventilation, curtains are basically “dust collectors.”
Think about it—you sweep and mop the floor every day, but curtains? You might not touch them all year.
If that’s not dirty, what is?
Moreover, if dust on curtains isn’t cleaned promptly, it can breed bacteria and dust mites. People with allergies should pay special attention.
Cleaning Methods I Learned
After the auntie left, I specifically asked her about several practical curtain cleaning methods.
Method 1: Vacuum + curtain brush
This is the simplest method.
Use a vacuum with a flat nozzle, go from top to bottom along the curtain folds.
After vacuuming, gently sweep with an electrostatic duster to remove remaining fine dust.
This method is suitable for daily maintenance, about once a month.
Method 2: Baking soda + white vinegar
Take down the curtains (if they can be removed), soak in a mixture of baking soda and white vinegar.
The ratio is roughly: one basin of warm water, add two spoons of baking soda, one cup of white vinegar.
Soak for about 20 minutes, gently rub, then rinse clean and hang to dry in a ventilated place.
This method is suitable for deep cleaning, once per quarter is enough.
Method 3: Professional fabric cleaner
Some curtain materials are delicate and can’t be washed with water.
In this case, you can buy a bottle of fabric-specific cleaner, spray on the curtain surface, then gently wipe with a clean towel.
After wiping, blow dry with a hair dryer.
Pitfalls I Fell Into
Let me share a lesson—
Previously, I thought the curtains were dirty and threw them directly into the washing machine.
The result? The curtains shrank.
My curtains are blended fabric, after a round in the washing machine, they came out 5 cm shorter.
Now when hung up, they’re short by a section, looks terrible 😭
So, if you’re not sure whether your curtains can be machine washed, it’s best to check the label first, or simply hand wash / dry clean.
Lazy Person’s Advice
If you’re really too lazy to wash curtains, you can buy removable Roman shades or no-drill tension rod curtains.
These curtains can be taken down and thrown in the washing machine, very convenient.
Or, you can buy curtain fabric with anti-static function, these curtains don’t accumulate dust easily, just vacuum them regularly.
Final Words
Curtain cleaning is really a case of “out of sight, out of mind.”
But for your family’s health, it’s still recommended to clean them regularly.
When was the last time you cleaned your curtains? Let’s chat in the comments, let me see how many people fell into the same trap as me 😭
