Faucet and Showerhead Covered in Limescale? Spent a Few Bucks and My $70 Faucet Finally Shines
Last week I almost threw out my bathroom showerhead.
Not because I’m fickle, but because I really couldn’t stand it anymore—the showerhead was spraying water like rain, here and there, taking a shower was like torture. I was thinking, this showerhead has only been used for two years, how did it become like this?
Later I found out, it was clogged by limescale.
Really, I really wanted to curse at that moment.
You know, my home is in Chengdu, the water quality is really hard. Tap water is full of calcium and magnesium ions, over time they form limescale, attaching to showerhead holes and faucet surfaces, a white patch, looking distressing.
I tried scrubbing with steel wool before—the faucet got scratched after scrubbing, like a spotted cat, even uglier.
Also tried soaking in vinegar—there was some effect, but that smell, made me dizzy, and after soaking had to rinse repeatedly with clean water, terribly troublesome.
How did I finally solve it?
You might not believe it, only spent two yuan.
Citric Acid for Descaling—My True Love
I saw someone on Xiaohongshu recommending citric acid for descaling, bought a pack with a try-it attitude.
Usage is super simple:
- Take a small bowl, pour a spoonful of citric acid, add warm water and mix
- Remove the faucet and showerhead, soak them in
- Wait 15-20 minutes
- Take out and brush with an old toothbrush, rinse clean
That simple.
Guess what?
All the limescale was gone.
Showerhead holes all unclogged, water flowing smoothly, like new. Faucet surface also shiny, wipe with fish-scale cloth, not even water stains left.
And citric acid is only two yuan per pack, can be used for a long time. Compared to those dozens-of-yuan “special descalers,” much cheaper.
Fish-Scale Cloth—The Ultimate Tool
Besides citric acid, I also want to recommend something—fish-scale cloth.
This thing is really amazing.
Wiping glass, faucets, mirrors, one wipe and they’re bright, no water marks. Regular cloths always leave water stains after wiping, fish-scale cloth doesn’t, after wiping like waxed.
My home now keeps three or four pieces, one for bathroom, one for kitchen, one for living room windows.
If you have the chance, really should get a few, not expensive, but really useful.
Final Words
Actually, for home cleaning, sometimes you really don’t need to spend big money.
Dozens-of-yuan imported cleaners might not work as well as two-yuan citric acid.
The key is knowing what to use and how to use it.
Next time your faucet or showerhead is clogged, don’t rush to buy new ones, first try the citric acid + fish-scale cloth combo. Might save you hundreds of yuan on new showerheads.
Really, personally tested and effective, don’t ask me how I know 😭
