Spring Cleaning Tested: 3 Cleaning Tools Worth Every Penny
Every spring deep clean, I wonder: how does my home get this dirty?
I clean regularly, yet come spring, window sills, kitchen grease, bathroom limescale all reveal themselves. Last year I tested tons of ‘cleaning essentials’, some genuinely great, others pure智商税.
Here are 3 worth-every-penny tools I personally tested, plus proper usage tips.
First: fish-scale cloth
This is genuinely amazing. I used to clean glass and mirrors with regular cloths, always leaving water streaks when dry, driving my OCD crazy.
Fish-scale cloth is different, textured fiber material that leaves zero streaks, sparkling like new. Plus no lint, unlike tissues leaving paper debris everywhere.
Best part? Cheap! $2-3 for a large pack, lasts a year. Now I use it on all smooth surfaces: mirrors, glass, TV screens, phone screens, even stainless steel sinks.
Usage tip: don’t dry wipe, dampen slightly for better results. Wipe in circles, not back-and-forth.
Second: degreaser
My kitchen disaster zones: stovetop and range hood. Regular cleaning only removes surface oil, aged grease buildup needs serious firepower that dish soap can’t handle.
Bought dedicated degreaser, spray and wait minutes, grease dissolves itself, wipes right off. That years-old black grease that previously needed scrubbing forever? Gone in minutes now.
But note: degreaser is alkaline and corrosive. Wear gloves, avoid skin contact. Don’t use on aluminum, causes discoloration.
I deep clean kitchen monthly, maintain with regular cleaners. Effortless yet effective.
Third: citric acid descaler
Bathroom limescale is my nemesis. Faucets, showerheads, glass partitions, anywhere with water eventually turns white.
Citric acid is natural and incredibly effective against limescale. I buy citric acid powder, mix with water in spray bottle, spray on limescale, wait 10 minutes, wipe off, mirror-bright finish.
Plus citric acid is gentle, unlike harsh hydrochloric acid. Rinse with water after use, no residue.
Pro tip: electric kettles develop scale over time, add citric acid and boil, scale detaches naturally. Better than vinegar, no smell.
Now, two坑 I fell into.
First: ‘universal’ cleaning paste. Ads claim it cleans everything: stainless, tile, glass, shoes, one paste for all. Bought it, result? Cleans everything, but cleans nothing well. Better to buy specialized cleaners for specific problems.
Second: steam cleaner. Influencer recommended, claimed high-temp steam kills bacteria and mites. Reality? Hassle to use, needs preheating, plugging in, water filling, and steam sprays everywhere making things wet. Used twice, now collecting dust.
My lesson: don’t fall for ‘universal’ labels, specialized tools work better.
Finally, spring cleaning scheduling.
I used to clean entire home in one go, ended up exhausted. Now I do ‘zone warfare’: bedroom today, kitchen tomorrow, one area per day.
Less exhausting, each area gets thorough cleaning. Plus completing each zone brings成就感, more motivation.
