Small Space Magic: Making 70sqm Feel Like 100sqm

When I moved into this small two-bedroom, I was genuinely overwhelmed—70 square meters of floor space that felt full the moment I unpacked.

Three years later, I’ve learned one crucial lesson: square footage doesn’t matter; how you use it does.

Now when friends visit, their first comment is usually “this looks bigger than 70sqm.” Here’s my “space hacking” playbook.

1. Grow Up: Don’t Waste Vertical Space

Most people focus on floor area and completely ignore what’s above.

My entryway is only one meter wide, but I added hooks and an over-door organizer for bags, keys, and masks. A slim shoe rack (15cm deep) fits perfectly underneath.

The kitchen is prime real estate for vertical storage. I installed a rod under the cabinets for spatulas and spoons; a magnetic knife strip next to the stove cleared half my counter space instantly.

2. Out of Sight, Out of Mind: Hidden Storage

The real problem with clutter isn’t quantity—it’s visual chaos.

My rule: if it can be hidden, it stays hidden.

Flat rolling bins under the bed store off-season blankets and clothes. That gap behind the sofa? Custom narrow cabinet for remotes and cables. Behind the bathroom mirror? All my skincare, toothpaste, and toothbrushes—completely invisible.

Oh, and my furniture buying standard: must have storage function. Bedside tables with drawers, a coffee table with a lift-top, even the entryway bench opens up for storage.

3. Zone Management: Give Everything a “Home”

My closet used to be chaos—finding one shirt meant digging through everything. Now it’s zoned by “tops-pants-dresses-jackets” with different colored hangers. I open the closet and instantly spot what I need.

Same for the kitchen—cabinets organized as “breakfast zone-seasonings-dry goods-cleaning.” Making breakfast? Just open the breakfast cabinet; everything’s within reach.

4. The “Soft Landing” Declutter Method

I know most people can’t commit to full decluttering—including me. So I use a compromise: the “purgatory box.”

Put items you’re unsure about into a box with a date. If you haven’t opened it in three months, donate or discard. This painless method helped me clear three large bags of stuff.

5. Light and Color Magic

This isn’t storage, but it works. Light walls + multiple light sources make spaces “feel” bigger. I painted one wall cream white, swapped curtains for sheer ones, and use three small lamps instead of one overhead light—the whole room brightens up.

The essence of organization isn’t stuffing more things in; it’s giving everything a place to belong. What’s your biggest storage challenge? Let’s chat in the comments.
