Humidity Control Battle: Dehumidifier vs AC—My Cost Analysis
The rainy season is back. My walls are sweating, clothes smell musty. Every year I face the same question: buy a dehumidifier or use AC dehumidify mode? This year I tested both and did the math.
Test 1: Efficiency
In the closet test, the dehumidifier reached target humidity in 45 minutes; AC took 1 hour 20 minutes. Dehumidifier wins—it’s purpose-built, AC is just moonlighting.
Test 2: Energy Cost
8-hour power consumption: dehumidifier 2.24 kWh, AC 6.4 kWh. AC uses nearly 3x more power. Over 3-month rainy season, that’s $33 difference—enough to buy a dehumidifier in 3 years.
My Recommendation
Southern homes with 80%+ humidity: get a dehumidifier. Northern homes with occasional dampness: AC mode suffices.
