Auto-Renewal Trap: How I Saved $7 Monthly by Cancelling Subscriptions

I can’t even.

Last month checking my credit card statement, found a $2 charge from a name I didn’t recognize. Turned out to be a video editing app subscription from six months ago. Stopped using the app ages ago, but it kept auto-renewing every month.

Even crazier—I kept digging and found 3 more auto-renewals! Music subscription, cloud storage, fitness app. Total: $7 monthly.

What’s $7? That’s 6 bubble teas. Six months = $42—enough for a decent piece of clothing.

Thing is, I don’t remember ever enabling auto-renewal. These apps have it pre-checked during signup. One careless tap and you’re trapped.

Spent last week cleaning up all auto-renewals. Here’s how I did it.

Step 1: Find All Auto-Renewals

iPhone user here. Check three places:

  1. iPhone Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions

Shows all App Store subscriptions. Found 5 here! Some apps were long uninstalled, but subscriptions lived on.

  1. Alipay → Me → Settings → Payment Settings → Auto-Pay

Shows auto-renewals through Alipay. Found 2.

  1. WeChat → Me → Services → Wallet → Payment Settings → Auto-Renewal

Same deal—auto-renewals through WeChat. Found 1.

Three checks, 8 total auto-renewals, $7 monthly. Only 2 were actually needed—6 were “zombie subscriptions.”

Step 2: Cancel What You Don’t Need

Found the zombies, time to cancel.

Most have a “Cancel Subscription” button in details—tap and done.

But some apps hide it deep. When that happens, contact customer service directly: “I want to cancel auto-renewal.” Usually works.

Step 3: Turn Off Auto-Pay

Both Alipay and WeChat have auto-pay features letting apps charge without confirmation.

I turned off auto-pay for everything except essentials. Rather type my password each time than get surprise charges.

Step 4: Set Reminders

For subscriptions I actually need (like my music app), I set calendar reminders 3 days before renewal.

Before renewal, I evaluate: was this month’s usage worth it? If not, cancel and resubscribe next month if needed.

Results After One Month

Canceled 6 unnecessary auto-renewals, saved $5 monthly. Plus disabled unnecessary auto-pay—total $7 monthly savings.

Best part: checking statements no longer brings that “what’s this charge” confusion.

Today’s Action Item

Open your phone right now. Check those three places I mentioned. Find one zombie subscription? Cancel it.

Even just finding one saves enough monthly for a bubble tea.
