Spring Cleaning Tested: I Tried 3 Methods, #2 Was Easiest
Last week I deep-cleaned my whole place—my back was killing me.
But honestly, the results were satisfying. Those usually-ignored hygiene dead zones finally got tackled.
Today I want to share 3 cleaning methods I tested—genuinely effective.
Method 1: Vinegar + Baking Soda for Kitchen Grease
The kitchen is a disaster zone, especially range hoods and stovetops. I’ve tried various cleaners—either not strong enough or too harsh.
This time I tested vinegar + baking soda combo—the results were stunning.
Steps:
- Sprinkle baking soda on greasy areas
- Spray vinegar (it will foam—normal reaction)
- Wait 5-10 minutes
- Wipe clean with cloth
I tried it on the range hood grease filter—couldn’t scrub it clean before, but this time it came out gleaming. Plus vinegar smell isn’t harsh—much better than chemical cleaners.
Cost: Baking soda 5 yuan/bag, vinegar 3 yuan/bottle—lasts a long time.
Best for: Kitchen grease, faucet limescale, tile grout
Method 2: Steam Mop—Floor Cleaning Game-Changer
This was my best cleaning purchase this year.
Regular mops never seemed to get floors truly clean, and left water marks that took forever to dry.
Steam mops are different.
Why it works:
- High-temperature sterilization: Steam reaches 100°C+, killing floor bacteria
- Instant drying: High-temp steam evaporates fast—walk on it immediately, no slip risk
- No detergent needed: Pure water cleans—eco-friendly and money-saving
I tested: 100-square-meter apartment, done in 15 minutes. Floors are genuinely clean—no water marks like regular mops leave.
Cost: Steam mops 200-500 yuan (I bought 299 yuan one—sufficient)
Best for: Tile floors, wood floors (lower temperature setting)
Method 3: Washing Machine Cleaner—Saving Laundry Quality
This is something many overlook.
Washing machines accumulate grime and bacteria over time. You think clothes are clean, but they’re actually getting dirtier.
I didn’t realize this until I washed a white shirt and found black spots on the cuffs. Turns out it was the washing machine.
Cleaning steps:
- Buy washing machine cleaner (available at supermarkets, 10 yuan/bag)
- Pour into washing machine drum
- Select “drum self-clean” mode (or highest water level + standard wash)
- Run complete cycle
- Wipe drum with cloth
After cleaning, the drained water was murky—shows how much grime accumulated. After cleaning, laundry is much cleaner.
Frequency recommendation: Once monthly
Cost: Washing machine cleaner 10 yuan/bag—10 yuan per month
Don’t Overlook These Areas
For seasonal cleaning, beyond the three key areas above, don’t miss these:
Air conditioner filters:
Summer’s coming, AC will be in use. Dirty filters mean smelly air and allergy risks.
I clean mine monthly—remove and rinse with water. If very dirty, use mild detergent.
Curtains:
Curtains don’t look dirty, but accumulate dust. Recommended washing every six months.
Mine are machine-washable—if unsure, check the label.
Mattresses:
Many don’t clean mattresses, but they accumulate sweat and skin flakes.
I use a dust mite vacuum, then wipe surface with damp cloth, finally air dry in ventilated area.
My Cleaning Schedule
Honestly, deep-cleaning everything at once is exhausting. I now do “batch cleaning”:
- Weekend morning: Kitchen + bathroom (dirtiest areas)
- Weekend afternoon: Living room + bedroom (floors, furniture)
- Weekday evenings: Balcony, curtains, and smaller areas
Spreading it out means not spending too much time daily, yet keeping home clean.
Final Thoughts
Cleaning has no shortcuts, but there are better methods.
Finding cleaning approaches that suit you saves time and energy. Instead of deep-cleaning every weekend, cultivate daily maintenance habits.
Remember, a clean home isn’t necessarily the tidiest—it’s the one that best fits your life.
Don’t ask how I know all this—it’s all learned through back pain.
