4 Forgotten Cleaning Spots for Seasonal Deep Cleaning

Last week’s seasonal deep clean—I tackled 4 usually ignored spots. The results grossed me out.

Seriously, some ‘blind spots’ hide filth you can’t imagine until you look.

Sharing my ‘seasonal deep-cleaning checklist’—clean these quarterly.

Blind Spot 1: Curtain Tops and Boxes

We wash curtains annually, but what about the ‘curtain box’ above them?

When I cleaned mine, thick dust layers inside, plus dead mosquitoes and spider webs… Wind blows, that dust drifts into your room.

Cleaning method:

  1. Use extendable duster (or vacuum with long attachment), sweep inside the curtain box
  2. Wipe curtain top edges with damp cloth
  3. If the box has a removable cover, take it down and wash thoroughly

Time: 15 minutes
Result: Air feels fresher

Blind Spot 2: Fridge Door Seals

That rubber seal around fridge doors? Mold paradise.

Especially in humid climates—black mold grows in seal crevices. Gross, and it contaminates food.

Cleaning method:

  1. Use cotton swabs or old toothbrush with baking soda solution (baking soda + warm water), scrub seal crevices
  2. Stubborn mold: apply diluted bleach with gloves on
  3. Wipe clean with water, dry thoroughly

⚠️ Clean every 2 months. If seals are cracked or deformed, replace them (buy matching model on Amazon, DIY replacement).

Blind Spot 3: Behind Washing Machine Drums

After years of use, gunk builds between inner and outer drums. This is why people say ‘washing machines are dirtier than toilets.’

If your washer has ‘drum clean’ cycle, run it monthly. If not, manual cleaning:

Cleaning method:

  1. Buy washing machine cleaner ($3 a box), pour in as directed
  2. Select highest water level, hottest temperature, empty cycle
  3. Soak 2-4 hours, then normal drain cycle
  4. Wipe drum edges with cloth to remove residue

Advanced: Hire professional disassembly cleaning (yearly, $15-25). Seeing the inner drum removed will explain why clothes itch after washing.

Blind Spot 4: Under Beds and Furniture

Under beds, sofas, cabinets—unreachable by normal sweeping, dust and hair accumulate.

Under my bed, I found:

  • Dust-bunny hair clumps (mouse-sized)
  • Long-lost socks
  • My cat’s hidden toy stash

Cleaning method:

  1. Use flat mop with extendable handle (electrostatic dust type), reach underneath
  2. Or robot vacuum, set ‘focused cleaning’ for repeated passes
  3. If too cluttered, move furniture for thorough cleaning

Tip: Under-bed storage boxes should have lids, or they’ll collect dust too.
