Spring Cleaning Overlooked Spots: The Range Hood Filter Is the One Everyone Forgets

When you do seasonal deep cleaning, are you like I used to be — only focused on the closet?

Last year that’s all I did. Then one day while cooking, my range hood suddenly gave out — suction power dropped to nothing, smoke filled the kitchen. I took it apart and found filters caked with thick grease, like scabs. Disgusting.

From that experience I learned my lesson: seasonal cleaning must include these 3 spots:

1. Range Hood Filters — The Disaster Zone

My range hood has old-style filters that are incredibly hard to remove. Calling a professional costs 150 yuan per visit. Eventually I figured out a tool-free method:

  • Boil a pot of hot water
  • Remove filters and place in the pot
  • Add baking soda and dish soap, boil for 10 minutes
  • Remove and scrub — the grease slides right off

For especially stubborn grease, add white vinegar too. Vinegar’s acidity softens the buildup while baking soda works on decomposition. Two-pronged approach works great.

The water after boiling was murky — filters came out looking like new. This method works for stainless steel filters. Don’t boil plastic parts though, they’ll warp.

2. AC Vents — The Invisible Grime

Many people don’t realize how dirty AC vents get. When I last opened mine, blades were coated in thick dust, some already moldy. With air like that, how could the air smell good?

Cleaning without removing the unit:

  • Wrap a damp paper towel around a bank card or membership card to scrape dust off blades
  • Spray with AC cleaner, wait 15 minutes
  • Turn to fan mode — dirty water drains through the condensation pipe

I use a brand called Mr. Strong for AC cleaner. Less than 30 yuan a bottle, lasts multiple uses. Look for 「antibacterial」 function, not just cleaning.

If blades already have mold, apply mold-removal gel, leave overnight, then wipe clean.

3. Floor Drains — Monthly Bacteria Prevention

Because floor drains always have water running through them, people assume they’re clean. Wrong.

Floor drains are dark, damp breeding grounds for bacteria. When我家’s drain started smelling weird, it was bacteria breaking down gunk and producing gas.

My treatment method:

  • Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain
  • Add half a cup of white vinegar
  • Wait 15 minutes for the reaction
  • Flush with hot water

Do this monthly and drains won’t develop odors. If you already have slight smell, drop in some deodorizing balls — natural mothball type works fine.

My Seasonal Cleaning Checklist Summary

  1. Closet organization (remove old clothes)
  2. Range hood filters (baking soda + dish soap + white vinegar, boil 10 minutes)
  3. AC vents (wet wipe dust + AC cleaner)
  4. Floor drains (baking soda + white vinegar + hot water)

No professional tools needed, no big expense. Results are just as good. Try it!
