May Day Holiday Life Hacks: 3 Plans for a Fulfilling Staycation (No Crowds)

The May Day holiday schedule is out — have you seen it?

April 29 to May 3, five days total. Take 2 days of annual leave in the middle, and you can string together a 9-day holiday from April 27 to May 3.

But honestly, I’m not particularly keen on fighting tourist crowds.

Last May Day, I went to Hangzhou’s West Lake. Said I was going to see scenery, actually went to see people. The Broken Bridge was invisible under the sea of tourists.

So this year I’m planning a staycation. But a staycation doesn’t equal boring!

Plan One: Deep Organizing Day

On the first day, I’m doing a full-house deep organization.

Not the superficial ‘fold some clothes’ kind — the ‘turn everything upside down for a complete settlement’ kind of deep.

Specifically: closet clothes — time to de-clutter what no longer fits. Bookshelf — re-categorize and rearrange. Kitchen cabinets — clear out all expired food. Fridge — give it a cleaning too.

The last time I did this kind of deep organization was during Chinese New Year. Several months have passed — definitely time for another round.

Plan Two: Skill Unlock Day

On the second day, learn something new.

I want to learn to cook a few presentable home dishes — like braised pork belly, sweet and sour ribs.

Usually so busy with work, I just throw together dinner after coming home. The holiday is perfect for spending time properly researching cooking.

Plan Three: Outdoor Fresh Air Day

On the third day, find a city park or suburb, spend a whole day outdoors.

No work, no phone checking, just sitting in the park, catching some sun, reading a book.

I especially love large urban parks with trees and water, where the crowd levels aren’t as insane as West Lake. Bring a picnic blanket and some snacks, easily spend an afternoon.

Actually, outdoor activities don’t need to go far — neighborhood green spaces work just fine.

Plan Four (Bonus): Couch Potato Recovery Day

The final day of the holiday, do absolutely nothing, just lounge.

After several days of organizing, cooking, outdoor activities — energy is spent. The last day is pure relaxation, recover your energy, prepare for returning to work.

I think holidays don’t need to be packed solid. Resting well is the most important thing.
