Skip the Expensive Cleaners: Kitchen Grease GONE for Under $1
Going Broke on Cleaners
Last week I went to the supermarket for kitchen cleaner—35 yuan a bottle, lasts maybe a month. That’s over 400 yuan a year just on cleaner.
Worse, some cleaners have harsh fumes and leave my hands dry and flaky. Then I discovered two ingredients that cost under 2 yuan combined—and work better than the expensive stuff.
Vinegar + Baking Soda = Cleaning Magic
I’ve used this combo for over six months. Stove tops, pot bottoms, range hood grease—all easily handled.
How to do it:
Sprinkle a layer of dry baking soda on the grease, spray with water to dampen, let sit 10 minutes to soften. Then pour on some white vinegar—it’ll foam up. Wait 5 minutes. Finally, scrub with a scouring pad, and the grease comes right off.
I was shocked the first time. That pot I’d used for two years had a thick layer of black crud on the bottom. After three rounds of this method, the original metal color actually showed through.
Why Better Than Store-Bought Cleaners?
First reason: saves money.
A bottle of white vinegar costs 5 yuan, a pack of baking soda 8 yuan—lasts over six months. That’s at most 30 yuan per year, over 90% savings compared to buying cleaners.
Second reason: safe.
Chemicals in cleaners irritate skin—my hands used to itch after using them. Vinegar and baking soda are common kitchen items, safe and non-irritating.
Third reason: no harsh smell.
Some cleaners have such strong odors the kitchen smells like chemicals for days. Vinegar has a slight sour scent but dissipates quickly, no lingering smell.
Works Great On These Spots
Stove top:
Oil splatters from cooking—sprinkle baking soda, spray vinegar, wait a few minutes, wipe clean. Much easier than scrubbing with steel wool, won’t scratch the surface either.
Pot bottom black residue:
Especially cast iron and stainless steel pots—after long use, bottoms develop a black layer. This method, repeated a few times, restores them to 80% new.
Range hood filters:
Remove and soak in vinegar-baking soda water for 30 minutes, then scrubbing is much easier. I used to just replace filters—50 yuan each—now I can reuse them.
When NOT to Use?
First: marble countertops.
Vinegar’s acidity can etch marble—don’t use it there. For marble, just use baking soda and water.
Second: severe burning.
If pots are badly scorched black, this method has limited effect—you need specialized cleaner. But for everyday grease, it’s absolutely enough.
Third: impatient people.
This method needs 15 minutes wait time—not instant. If you need immediate results, stick with commercial cleaners.
My Usage Frequency
I use this method once a week in my kitchen, with daily quick wipes. That’s about 30 yuan per year—saved hundreds compared to before.
Key is it’s safe and worry-free, no fear of kids touching harsh chemicals. Plus vinegar and baking soda are food-grade—if they touch skin, no problem.
Final Reminder
Rinse thoroughly after use. Baking soda leaves white residue—wipe a few times with clean water and it’s gone.
