Free Fridge Deodorizer: Two Items You Already Have

Deodorizer Box Again?

Opened the fridge last week—durian smell mixed with garlic, hit me like a wall. Rushed to buy a deodorizer box. 25 yuan, lasts two months—that’s 150 yuan a year.

Worse, effectiveness drops quickly, feels wasteful. Then I tried some no-cost methods and found two that work surprisingly well.

Method 1: Paper Towels

You read that right—ordinary paper towels.

How: Place a new roll in a fridge corner, change weekly. Don’t throw away used paper—still good for wiping tables and floors, no waste.

When I first heard this I thought “too simple.” But tried it and—it actually works. After two or three days, fridge odors noticeably decreased.

Principle: Paper towel fiber structure absorbs odor molecules, like activated charcoal. Not as strong as charcoal, but cheaper and more convenient.

Method 2: Grapefruit Peel

If you eat grapefruit, don’t throw away the peel.

How: Cut peel into small pieces, distribute throughout fridge corners. One grapefruit’s peel lasts about a week—replace when dried.

Bonus: deodorizes AND gives the fridge a light natural grapefruit scent, way more natural than deodorizer box fragrances.

I eat grapefruit mostly in winter—during that time, fridge basically has no odors. Summer I use paper towels, alternating methods.

A Few More Tips

Tip 1: Regular cleaning.

Deodorizing treats symptoms; the root cause is spoiled food. Check weekly, throw out expired or rotten items promptly.

Tip 2: Seal properly.

Strong-smelling foods (durian, garlic, stinky tofu) must be sealed before going in the fridge—don’t leave them exposed. I bought some sealed containers for a few dozen yuan, but they last a long time.

Tip 3: Zone placement.

Keep raw food, cooked food, and vegetables separate to avoid cross-odors. Upper shelf for cooked food, lower for raw, drawers for produce.

Drawbacks of These Methods

First: slow results.

Unlike spraying deodorizer for instant effect, these need two or three days to notice a change. If you need immediate deodorizing, stick with store-bought.

Second: requires regular changing.

Paper towels change weekly, grapefruit peel when dried. Costs nothing but must remember to change.

Third: limited for strong odors.

If the fridge has extremely strong-smelling items (like stinky tofu), these methods can’t fully mask it—sealed containers are still needed.

My Actual Usage

I alternate between the two methods. Winter: grapefruit peel. Other seasons: paper towels. Annual cost: 0 yuan.

Used to spend 150 yuan a year on deodorizer boxes. Now I save it, and the effect is no worse.

Final Reminder

Don’t throw away used paper towels—still work as rags. Wipe tables, stove tops, anything. Repurposing, not wasting.
