I Opened My Washing Machine and Nearly Gagged: The Deep Clean Guide

I’ll confess something.

My washing machine has been running for nearly two years without a deep clean. Each time I finished a load, everything smelled fresh—so I assumed it was fine. Then last month, I needed to access the drain pipe and accidentally looked inside the drum.

The inner drum had a layer of blackish-gray slime—something between soap residue, mineral deposits, and who-knows-what-else. The drain outlet had accumulated small clumps of fiber. Disgusting.

That moment I decided: this had to be fixed.

Why Your Drum Gets So Dirty

The mechanism is simple: when washing machines clean clothes, the water flushes through the fabric, not the drum itself. Detergent residue, lint from clothes, minerals from water—over time these accumulate on the drum walls and bottom, forming a kind of “biofilm.”

Summer heat and humidity turn this sludge into a bacteria incubator. Every time you run a wash, you’re essentially swirling your clothes through bacterial soup.

Three Cleaning Methods, I Tested Two

Method One: White Vinegar + Baking Soda (Cost: ~5 yuan)

Steps:

  1. Pour 200ml white vinegar into the drum
  2. Run on quick wash for 5 minutes
  3. Stop and let sit for 2 hours
  4. Add another 200ml vinegar and 100g baking soda, run 10 minutes
  5. Finally rinse twice with plain water

Verdict: Works fine for moderate buildup like mine was.

Method Two: Dedicated Washing Machine Cleaner (Cost: ~15 yuan/box)

A repair technician recommended this. I bought a box and tested it—definitely more convenient than DIY and more thorough.

Steps:

  1. Pour cleaner into drum
  2. Fill to max water level
  3. Heat to 60°C, run 5 minutes
  4. Let sit overnight
  5. Run a normal cycle the next day

Verdict: After finishing, I opened the drum and it practically sparkled. No exaggeration.

Method Three: Full Drum Disassembly (Cost: 0 yuan DIY or ~150 yuan professional)

If you’re handy, you can find tutorials online for disassembling and cleaning the drum yourself. Or call an appliance cleaning professional—typically around 150 yuan for both front-load and top-load machines.

My Recommendation

If you’ve never cleaned your drum, try Method Two first. Lowest cost, best results. For ongoing maintenance, do Method One once a month and you’re set.

Summer means more laundry frequency. Your washing machine needs regular cleaning more than ever. Stop “washing” your clothes in increasingly dirty water.
