Storing Summer Bedding: How to Keep Bamboo Mats and AC Blankets Fresh Until Next Year

A few days ago I finally retired our bamboo mat and switched to the thin blanket.

You know what happened next?

My mom saw me just rolling up the mat and shoving it into the cabinet. She lit into me: “You’re just putting it away like that? You want to use it next year, right?”

I… honestly didn’t know the proper way to store it.

She taught me her method, I tried it, and it works. Here it is:

Bamboo mat storage — the right way:

Step one: Clean. Not just a quick wipe. You need to go through every single gap with a wet towel. If there are sweat stains or mold spots, mix white vinegar + baking soda, scrub, then wipe clean with water.

Step two: Air dry completely in direct sunlight. This is crucial. Store it damp, and next year you’ll find yellow stains and mold. My mom told me she used to wipe mats with diluted salt water before sun-drying — said it helped repel insects.

Step three: Moisture protection. Once fully dry, wrap the mat in newspaper (the ink has a mild insect-repelling scent) or clean cotton fabric. Then put it in a plastic bag or storage container, and store in a dry, ventilated area.

Warning: never use plastic bags directly! No breathability = mold city next year.

AC blanket storage is simpler, but still has its rules.

For cotton or down blankets: don’t vacuum compress them. It’ll damage the loft and reduce warmth. Use breathable storage bags, and store on the top shelf of your closet.

For thin fiber blankets: light compression is fine, saves space.

My personal habit: store the bamboo mat separately from the AC blanket. Mat goes in the cabinet near the balcony — better ventilation. Blanket goes in the bedroom closet.

One more tip: throw a few mothballs in the cabinet before storing. Prevention is better than cure.

My mom also said: “Before using it again next year, air it out in the sun first. Let it breathe.”

She’s right.

Seasonal storage seems simple, but there’s real technique involved. Do it right, and your bedding lasts years. Do it wrong, and you’re buying new stuff next summer.

Don’t ask me how much a new bamboo mat costs. It’s not cheap.

Savings is earnings, right?
