Spring Dampness Prevention Guide: When Humidity Hits, My Walls Finally Stopped 'Crying'

I woke up a few days ago to find water droplets on my bedroom wall.

Not a leak—condensation. Air humidity was so high, the wall was ‘sweating.’

This is the infamous ‘returning southern weather.’ Every spring, southern China goes through this nightmare.

Moldy walls, damp clothes, warped furniture, slippery floors… humidity attacks from all directions.

After years of trial and error, I’ve finally developed an effective anti-dampness system. Sharing it with you today.

First, understand: where does moisture come from?

Many think moisture comes from outside, so they seal windows shut. That’s only half right.

Indoor moisture has three main sources:

  1. Outdoor infiltration (through window/door gaps)
  2. Indoor generation (cooking, showering, drying clothes)
  3. Ground seepage (especially bad for ground floor or basements)

Different sources need different countermeasures.

Core Strategy 1: Control Ventilation Timing

Many people’s first reaction to humidity is sealing windows. Not wrong, but not precise enough.

The correct approach:

  • 6-9 AM: DON’T open windows! Peak humidity time
  • 12-2 PM: Brief window opening OK—outdoor humidity relatively lower
  • After 4 PM: Close windows again, prevent evening humidity invasion
  • Evening: If opening windows, only open leeward side, avoid cross-draft

My testing shows: precisely controlling ventilation timing works better than keeping windows sealed all day.

Core Strategy 2: Targeted Dehumidification by Area

Different rooms need different dehumidification focus.

‘Bathroom’:

  • Turn on exhaust fan immediately after showering, minimum 10 minutes
  • Wipe mirror with squeegee, don’t let air-dry
  • Mop floor with dry mop

‘Kitchen’:

  • Run range hood while cooking, keep on 5 minutes after
  • Wipe water stains around sink promptly
  • Consider placing dehumidifier boxes under sink cabinet

‘Wardrobe’:

  • Dehumidifier bags are essential, hang several inside
  • Store valuable clothes in vacuum compression bags
  • Regularly air out clothes, even just hanging in ventilated areas

‘Bedroom’:

  • Place dehumidification pads or old newspapers under mattress (replace when damp)
  • Air out bedding on sunny days, don’t wait until it feels damp
  • Small dehumidifier by bedside helps

Core Strategy 3: Choosing Dehumidification Equipment

Three main types on the market: dehumidifiers, AC dehumidify mode, and dehumidifier boxes/bags.

‘Dehumidifiers’: Best results, suitable for large areas. Buying tips:

  • Check dehumidification capacity (liters/day)—12-20L sufficient for home use
  • Check tank capacity—too small means frequent emptying
  • Check noise level—under 40dB for bedroom use

Price generally 500-1500 RMB. I use Xiaomi’s, two years and still good.

‘AC Dehumidify Mode’: OK for emergencies, but don’t run long-term. AC dehumidification cools the room, uncomfortable for extended periods, and power-hungry.

‘Dehumidifier Boxes/Bags’: Good for small spaces like wardrobes, drawers. Pros: cheap, silent. Cons: limited capacity, need frequent replacement.

My setup: dehumidifier in living room, small dehumidifier in bedroom, hanging bags in wardrobe, boxes in kitchen and bathroom.

Core Strategy 4: What If Mold Already Appeared?

If you find mold on walls or furniture, don’t panic.

‘Wall Mold’:

  • Mild: Wipe with diluted bleach (1:10 ratio)
  • Moderate: Buy specialized wall mold remover
  • Severe: May need repainting, consider professional treatment

Note: Always wear gloves and mask when cleaning mold—mold spores are unhealthy.

‘Clothes with Musty Smell’:

  • Slight odor: Soak in vinegar-water solution, then wash
  • Serious mold stains: Recommend professional dry cleaning

‘Furniture Mold’:

  • Wood furniture: Wipe with alcohol, then thoroughly air-dry
  • Leather furniture: Use specialized leather cleaner, avoid water

My Daily Maintenance Checklist

Daily:

  • Check dehumidifier tank, empty when full
  • Promptly wipe water stains in bathroom, kitchen

Weekly:

  • Replace dehumidifier bags in wardrobe
  • Open windows for ventilation (choose low-humidity periods)

Monthly:

  • Check walls, ceilings for mold spots
  • Air out infrequently worn clothes

Anti-dampness is a long war, not a one-time fix.

But once you establish routine maintenance habits, humidity season becomes manageable.

I’ve achieved: no wall mold, no clothes odor, dry comfortable bedding.

Hope this guide helps you too.
