Skip the Brand Names: 5 Items Under 15 Yuan That Clean Your Whole House
My cleaning cabinet has no “Mr. Muscle,” no “Green Shield,” no drain cleaners of any kind.
Not because I can’t afford them. It’s because I found better alternatives — at roughly one-tenth the cost.
This isn’t a sponsored post. No brand paid me. I just genuinely think these things work so well I recommend them to everyone.
Let me tell you why I went down this rabbit hole.
Last June 18th shopping festival, I impulse-bought four bottles of different brand cleaners for about 200 yuan. By year’s end, two had expired, one I never used because the smell was overpowering. Throwing them away felt like losing the money for two T-shirts.
That’s when I started researching alternatives. My conclusion: many common kitchen items, combined cleverly, become all-purpose cleaners.
1. Baking Soda (Kitchen Essential)
The most versatile alkaline cleaner. 5 jin package, about 8 yuan, lasts a year.
- Microwave interior: bowl of water + 2 tablespoons baking soda, heat 3 minutes, wipe clean — grease dissolves
- Fridge door seal: damp cloth with baking soda powder, scrubbing removes mold spots effectively
- Cutting board: layer of baking soda + half a lemon, sit 10 minutes, rinse — removes odors and sanitizes
2. White Vinegar (Acid for Water Scale)
2 liters, about 5 yuan. Uses you wouldn’t believe.
- Faucet scale: paper towels soaked in vinegar, wrap around faucet, 30 minutes, wipe clean — shines like new
- Showerhead: disassemble, soak in vinegar 2 hours, water flow restores instantly
- Plastic storage box odors: 1:1 vinegar water solution, wipe, air dry
3. Expired Toothpaste (Don’t Throw It!)
Don’t toss that expired toothpaste — the abrasive is perfect for certain cleaning jobs.
- White cloth shoes: dab on stains, scrub with old toothbrush, wipe with damp cloth
- Silver jewelry: apply toothpaste, rub with soft cloth, restores some shine
- Tea stains in cups: toothpaste + hot water, shake vigorously 30 seconds, stains disappear
4. 75% Medical Alcohol (Disinfect + Electronics)
Most households have this. 500ml, about 10 yuan, lasts forever.
- Keyboard and phone screen: spray on microfiber cloth, wipe — much cheaper than specialty wipes
- Door handles: spray and wipe, disinfects and cleans
- Permanent marker marks: alcohol + cotton pad, apply 5 minutes, wipe clean
5. Orange Peels (Natural Deodorizer + Cleaner)
Don’t throw away peeled orange peels — sun-dry them for natural deodorizing.
- Fridge deodorizer: dried peels in corners, freshens for about a month
- Microwave deodorizing: put peels in, heat 1 minute, natural fragrance replaces chemical smell
- Range hood filter cleaning: soak filter in hot water + orange peels 20 minutes, grease floats off
Total cost: baking soda 8 yuan + vinegar 5 yuan + expired toothpaste (free) + alcohol 10 yuan + orange peels (free) = under 15 yuan.
That 15 yuan covers: microwave cleaning, fridge cleaning, cutting board cleaning, faucet cleaning, showerhead cleaning, white shoe cleaning, silver jewelry cleaning, keyboard cleaning, phone screen cleaning, door handle disinfecting, permanent marker removal, fridge deodorizing, range hood filter cleaning.
I think that’s pretty exceptional value.
One psychological benefit of using natural materials: cleaning feels less like a chore. With brand cleaners, there’s a heaviness — “I’m doing housework.” With these, it feels more like “I’m caring for my home.”
Might be my imagination, but it does make me more willing to tackle cleaning tasks.
