April 2026 Purchase Tax Benefits: Two Categories Right Now Offer the Biggest Savings

Starting in April, a new round of purchase tax incentive policies has rolled out. After reviewing this year’s policies, I found two categories with better benefits than previous years—let me share what I found.

Category 1: New Energy Vehicles (NEVs)

This year, the national purchase tax exemption for NEVs has been extended with even greater benefits. New energy vehicles meeting certain range standards can get a full exemption on purchase tax, saving anywhere from a few thousand to tens of thousands of RMB depending on the vehicle price.

But here’s the key point: not all NEVs qualify for the full exemption—it depends on range standards and battery energy density requirements. Before buying, I recommend checking the latest directory on the Ministry of Finance website, or just ask the 4S shop directly whether this vehicle is on the list.

Additionally, this year introduced a new benefit: users who scrap an old car and purchase a new NEV can receive an extra subsidy. This subsidy is calculated separately from the purchase tax exemption—essentially a double benefit.

Category 2: Green Home Appliances

Many provinces have launched green appliance trade-in subsidy policies this year, mainly covering large items like refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners. Green appliances with energy efficiency ratings of Level 1 or 2 can receive subsidies at certain percentages, varying by province—with some reaching up to around 10% of the purchase price.

Using a 4,000 RMB refrigerator as an example: a 10% subsidy equals 400 RMB. That’s pretty significant.

My practical tips:

  1. First confirm you actually need to buy—don’t force a purchase just because of incentives
  2. Always verify the item is on the subsidy list before buying—some models aren’t covered
  3. If you have old appliances to dispose of, some channels will pay you for them—don’t just throw them away
  4. Policy benefits usually have time limits—once the period expires, they’re gone

At the end of the day, policy incentives are nice to have, but think about your actual needs first. The real way to save money isn’t buying cheap things—it’s buying things you actually use.

Today’s one action: open your notes app, list the things you want to buy, rank them by urgency, and check whether any align with this policy window.
