Appliance Cleaning Calendar: 6 Appliances That Need Quarterly Cleaning, Many Do Step One Wrong

Learned this the hard way.

Last week washing machine suddenly quit. Repair technician opened it and said “How long since you cleaned this? Full of grime and mold.”

I froze — doesn’t it have self-cleaning? Technician said “Self-cleaning only handles surface dirt, deep grime and mold need manual cleaning.”

Interesting thing is, many appliances have “hidden dirt” — look clean outside, filthy inside. I compiled an “appliance cleaning calendar” to share with you all.

Cleaning Calendar: 6 Must-Clean Appliances Quarterly

1. Washing Machine

Frequency: Quarterly
Focus: Drum, filter, door seal

Many get step one wrong: pour in cleaner, start self-clean mode.

Correct steps:

  1. Wipe door seal with dry cloth first (most prone to hiding mold)
  2. Clean filter (at machine bottom, open cover to remove)
  3. Pour washing machine cleaner, run “high temperature mode”
  4. After running, leave door open to air dry

My personal feeling: this method works way better than just pouring cleaner. After cleaning, clothes no longer have that musty smell.

2. Refrigerator

Frequency: Quarterly
Focus: Fridge compartment, freezer, door seal

Correct steps:

  1. Unplug, empty fridge
  2. Wipe interior with warm water + baking soda (no special cleaner needed)
  3. Focus on door seal (most prone to hiding grime)
  4. Air dry before plugging back in, return food

Benefit: baking soda is safe and non-toxic, no residual smell. Been doing this quarterly, fridge still looks new after 5 years.

3. Air Conditioner

Frequency: Quarterly (when seasons change)
Focus: Filter, cooling fins, air vents

Correct steps:

  1. Remove filter, rinse with water and air dry
  2. Spray cooling fins with AC cleaner (no disassembly needed)
  3. Wipe air vents with dry cloth
  4. Run “fan mode” 30 minutes to clear odors

I used to do this wrong — only cleaned filter, not cooling fins. Later learned cooling fins are AC’s dirtiest part.

4. Range Hood

Frequency: Quarterly
Focus: Oil cup, filter, fan blades

Correct steps:

  1. Remove oil cup and filter, soak in hot water + dish soap
  2. Spray fan blades with degreaser (no disassembly needed)
  3. Wipe exterior and control panel
  4. Air dry before reassembly

Most practical part: no need to spend hundreds hiring professionals, can do at home.

5. Microwave

Frequency: Quarterly
Focus: Interior walls, turntable, vents

Correct steps:

  1. Bowl of water + lemon slices, microwave 3 minutes
  2. After heating, don’t open door — let steam soften grime 5 minutes
  3. Wipe interior with damp cloth, remove turntable to wash
  4. Dry with cloth, leave door open to air out

Benefit: lemon removes odors, steam softens stubborn stains, no scrubbing needed.

6. Water Heater

Frequency: Quarterly
Focus: Inner tank, magnesium rod, safety valve

Correct steps:

  1. Unplug, close water inlet valve
  2. Open drain valve, discharge tank water
  3. Rinse inner tank (pour water from inlet, drain from outlet)
  4. Check magnesium rod (replace if severely corroded)

Many don’t know this, but water heater tanks accumulate most scale. After cleaning, hot water flow speed improved significantly.

Four Cleaning Reminders

First reminder: Unplug before cleaning.

Safety first — unplug any appliance before cleaning. Made this mistake before, almost got shocked cleaning AC without unplugging.

Second reminder: Don’t scrape grime with hard objects.

Many scrape grime vigorously, but this scratches appliance surfaces. Correct approach: soften grime with cleaner before wiping.

Third reminder: Air dry before using.

After cleaning, don’t immediately plug in and use. Open windows to ventilate and dry. Otherwise residual moisture causes short circuits.

Fourth reminder: Regular beats sporadic.

Many wait until appliances break to clean them. Actually regular cleaning is more important. One hour quarterly beats expensive repairs when things break.

My Summary

This cleaning calendar, tested and effective. Washing machine, refrigerator, AC, range hood, microwave, water heater — these 6 appliances cleaned quarterly last 5 years longer.

Don’t ask how I know — learned by making mistakes. Now I stick this calendar on my fridge, reminds me when it’s time.

Not complicated, remember one phrase: “Maintain appliances regularly, don’t wait until broken to fix.” Simple and practical, saves plenty on repairs.
