Spring Appliance Maintenance Guide: 5 Tasks to Add 5 Years to Your AC and Fridge

When Chengdu suddenly heated up the other day, I turned on my AC and was hit by a wave of musty air.

That’s when I realized, after last summer, I never touched it again. Dust accumulated on the filter, internal moisture built up, of course it stinks.

Spring is actually the best time for appliance maintenance. Weather’s mild, technicians aren’t overbooked, and you’ll be ready for summer’s peak usage. Here’s my spring appliance maintenance checklist, follow it, and your AC and fridge really will last years longer.

Air Conditioner: Filter Cleaning Is Just Step One

Many think AC maintenance means cleaning the filter. That’s barely scratching the surface.

Filter dust definitely needs clearing, but that’s cosmetic. More critical are the evaporator and condenser coils, if these accumulate dust, cooling efficiency drops and bacteria grow, sending musty air into your home.

My maintenance process:

Step one: power off. Non-negotiable, safety first.

Step two: remove filter, rinse with water. If very dirty, soak in neutral detergent, but dry completely before reinstalling.

Step three: buy AC cleaner spray, apply to evaporator coils. Wait 10 minutes for cleaner to dissolve internal dust and grime. Then run AC cooling mode for 15 minutes, dirty water automatically drains out.

Step four: check outdoor unit. Clear any debris blocking airflow for proper heat dissipation.

After this routine, cooling improves noticeably and power consumption drops. I tested this last year, consumption differed nearly 15% before and after maintenance.

Refrigerator: Defrosting and Seal Inspection

Your fridge works hardest, 24/7 nonstop. Spring maintenance covers three things: defrosting, cleaning, and seal inspection.

If you have an older direct-cool fridge, defrost when freezer frost exceeds 5mm. Thick frost hurts cooling efficiency and increases power use. Defrosting’s simple, turn off power, place hot water bowl in freezer, close door for 20 minutes; frost falls off naturally.

Cleaning focuses on removing stains and odors from the refrigerator compartment. Wipe shelves and drawers with baking soda water, it cleans and deodorizes. Avoid harsh cleaners that leave residual smells contaminating food.

Seal inspection is often overlooked. Slide a piece of paper in the fridge door gap, if it pulls out easily, the seal is aging and needs replacement. Poor sealing leaks cold air, forcing the compressor to work harder, wasting electricity and stressing the machine.

Washing Machine: Drum Cleaning Is Key

Washing machines accumulate significant dirt and bacteria on the outer drum over time. The inner drum looks clean, but the outer surface may be filthy.

Modern washers usually have a drum clean function, run monthly using hot water and high-speed rotation to clean the drum. But this only handles routine maintenance; spring calls for deep cleaning.

Hire professional appliance cleaners to disassemble and thoroughly clean the drum. Costs roughly 100-200 RMB, once a year is enough.

If you prefer DIY, use washing machine cleaner. Pour in per instructions, select highest water level and hottest temperature, and let the machine take a bath.

Quick Maintenance for Other Appliances

Range hood: Empty grease container, soak filters in degreaser. If suction noticeably drops, the fan impeller may need cleaning.

Electric water heater: Check pressure relief valve function. If scale buildup is evident, hire a technician to clean the tank interior.

Microwave: Wipe interior with damp cloth, remove turntable for cleaning. Pay attention to door seals, food debris affects sealing.

My Maintenance Schedule

I’ve organized these tasks into a schedule for reference:

April Spring: Deep AC cleaning, fridge defrosting, washer drum clean, range hood filter cleaning

July Mid-summer: Quick AC filter cleaning, fridge seal inspection

October Fall: Water heater check, whole-house appliance exterior cleaning

January Winter: Washer deep clean, electric water heater tank inspection

Following this rhythm, household appliances basically avoid major problems. Maintenance costs far less than repairs or replacement.

After all, appliances are like people, show regular care, and they won’t let you down when it matters.
