Fridge Odor Problems: 3 Methods Better Than Store-Bought Deodorizers

Last week opened the fridge, weird smell hit me. Almost thought something spoiled, checked everything—found nothing.

Realized fridges naturally accumulate mixed odors over time—leftovers, fruits, meats, all flavors blending together.

Bought supermarket fridge deodorizers, 10+ yuan each, mediocre results. Later tried zero-cost methods, found them better than store-bought.

Method 1: Lemon Deodorizing (Freshest)

Materials: 1 fresh lemon

Steps:

  1. Slice lemon
  2. Place in small dish in fridge
  3. Replace weekly

Principle: Lemon contains citric acid and volatile oils, neutralizes odor molecules, leaves fresh scent.

Results: Tried it—fridge smelled like lemon by next day. Lemon also absorbs fridge moisture, two birds with one stone.

Cost: One lemon 2 yuan, lasts a week.

Method 2: Used Tea Leaves (Longest-Lasting)

Materials: Used tea leaves (green or black tea)

Steps:

  1. Dry tea leaves (microwave 1 minute works too)
  2. Put in gauze bag or old sock
  3. Place in fridge corner
  4. Replace monthly

Principle: Tea has countless tiny pores, super absorption. Plus tea has natural fragrance—deodorizes while scenting.

Results: Mom taught me this, her family used it for years. Don’t throw away tea leaves—dry them and use, completely zero cost.

Cost: 0 yuan (tea leaves you’d throw away anyway)

Method 3: Baking Soda (Most Powerful)

Materials: Baking soda powder

Steps:

  1. Pour half dish baking soda
  2. Place open in fridge
  3. Replace every two months

Principle: Baking soda is alkaline, neutralizes acidic odor molecules. Large particle surface area, strong absorption.

Results: Especially effective against fishy and foul odors. Once put fish in fridge—smell wouldn’t dissipate. Put dish of baking soda, gone in two days.

Cost: Baking soda 3 yuan/pack, lasts six months.

Pitfalls I Hit (Don’t Copy Me)

Pitfall 1: Coffee grounds. Internet said coffee grounds deodorize—tried it, terrible results. Plus coffee grounds easily get damp and moldy, worse smell.

Pitfall 2: Bamboo charcoal bags. Bought bamboo charcoal bags—okay results, but fail after months, need rebuying. Better to use free tea leaves that last.

Pitfall 3: Air freshener spray. Never try this—air freshener only masks odors, doesn’t solve root problem. Plus chemicals might contaminate food.

My Advice

Don’t wait until fridge stinks to deodorize.

Daily maintenance:

  • Store food in airtight containers, don’t leave uncovered
  • Strong-smelling things (durian, pickles) seal in containers
  • Empty and wipe fridge monthly
  • Deep deodorize with lemon or baking soda quarterly

This way, fridge stays odor-free all year.

Savings calculation:

  • Store deodorizer: 15-30 yuan each, lasts 3 months
  • Lemon: 2 yuan each, lasts 1 week (monthly cost 8 yuan)
  • Tea leaves: 0 yuan
  • Baking soda: 3 yuan/pack, lasts 6 months (monthly cost 0.5 yuan)
