Tarnished Silver, Sliding Mats, Moldy Grout - I Tested 15 Lesser-Known Home Hacks
Hey everyone, I recently tackled all those small household problems I’ve been “aware of but never fixed.”
First up: tarnished silver jewelry. I learned this the hard way—I used to pay jewelry stores to clean my pieces. Then I saw online that toothpaste works. I tried it, and yes, it does work, but regular white toothpaste isn’t very effective. Then I discovered that using a cotton pad with makeup remover and a bit of toothpaste works even better than professional cleaning, and it doesn’t damage the jewelry at all.
Sliding rugs were something I never cared about until I almost slipped at the front door. My mom taught me this trick: lay plastic wrap underneath the rug. The friction between the plastic and floor keeps it from sliding. I tried it, and it really works! Plus plastic wrap is super cheap—saved me at least 30 yuan compared to buying anti-slip pads.
Moldy tile grout was the most annoying problem. I’d tried brushes and cleaners, nothing worked. Then I saw a blogger’s method: soak paper towels in 84 disinfectant (bleach), place them on the moldy areas for 30 minutes, then scrub. This method is amazing, but wear gloves—84 is corrosive. I wore gloves but forgot about my nail edges, and my cuticles turned white for days.
Refrigerator top cleaning is something many people overlook. I only realized this after making the mistake—lay plastic wrap on top of the fridge and replace it every 3 months. No more climbing up to clean! This trick is so clever. I recommended it to friends, and they all said “why didn’t I think of that.”
